What a Runner does in his typical day

The life of a D1 runner can be quite an eventful one. Every school is much different than the others, so no two schools will offer the same experiences. Whether it be the coach, the training style, the teammates, or just the overall atmosphere, every experience will be different. That being said, I am going to tell you my personal experiences are, and what my typical day is like as a runner at SUU.

MORNING ROUTINE

My typical day starts bright and early. I will usually wake up around 6:00 AM and grab a quick and healthy bite to eat to start my day. I will usually just eat something like a banana or a granola bar because it is light on my stomach. After that I will get ready for practice and carpool down to the track in order to get there on time for practice at 6:30.

PRACTICE

Once we get to the track we will go through our warm up routine that consists of stretching and getting ready for the run. We will do different warm up depending on what the run is for the day. If it is a work out day we will go on a 2-3 mile warm up run before the workout. If it is just an easy day (which it is most of the time) we will just go on a 10 mile run around the city or trails near by. This will usually take us anywhere from an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes depending on how we are feeling.

RECOVERY AND WEIGHTS

After our run has been completed we will head over to the training room by the track. Here will will just stretch out, ice, or do anything to get recovered and ready for the next practice. There are trainers here to help out with any issues or injuries that we might be having

After we are done in the training room we either go home or go to the weight room. We have weight training three times a week, where we will go through a weight routine that our weights coach has designed for us. We will usually be lifting for about one hour. When we are done lifting they have a variety of healthy snack options that I will usually have for my breakfast for the day. If we do not have weights I will usually just go home and cook myself some breakfast.

AFTER HOURS

The day is pretty smooth sailing from this point on. I will get ready for school and head out for the day. My classes usually start around 11:00 AM. I will go to all of my classes and have a lunch break at the cafeteria around 1:00. I am usually done will all of my class and home around 3:00.

Depending on the day I will go on a shakeout run of about 2-4 miles later on that day. This run is usually really slow and easy. The rest of the day is spent either doing homework, hanging out with friends, or working. I will usually try to cook up a nice dinner and get to bed early to have a good start to the next day!

And that is the day in the life of a D1 runner!
